Bringing a baby into this world is such a happy time, but why do I feel so sad? Why do I feel so lonely? Why do I feel so anxious and irritable? Where are these upsetting thoughts coming from? And why am I not eating and sleeping? You are not alone. Becoming a new parent can be joyful but it can also be extremely hard and bring on feelings you have never experienced before.
Maternal mental health is a critical topic in this country and around the world. In so many cases, the perinatal experience reveals perinatal mental health disorders. No culture, age, income level or race can escape some of the challenges surrounding maternal mental health. If you are pregnant or up to 12 months postpartum and are experiencing any of the issues above, your challenges are likely related to perinatal mental health.
I am a mom. I have been in your shoes. I know we need support, which is why I have dedicated myself to being part of my client’s perinatal support journey. And dads out there, I see you too. I am here for you as well. You may be trying to support your partner or suffering (likely in silence) yourself. I see you, and I am here for you.
If you're symptoms last more than two to three weeks, seek out help. You don't have to do this alone. Getting help isn't a sign of weakness, it's one of strength. It takes a village. You are not alone.
